How To Make Your Own Protein Granola

There's something about homemade granola that is just so good. If you're looking for an easy healthy snack to add into your weekly rotation, make sure you learn how to make protein granola next!

As usual on this blog, this recipe can be followed as is or made with what you have on hand. Protein granola is so easy to throw together and great for meal prep because it's easy to store. And once you have a big can of it, you can use it 100 different ways throughout the week!

Because protein granola has protein and carbs in it, it makes for a great post-workout snack. Turn it into granola bars, snack on handfuls of it, or add it to the top of your yogurt or smoothie bowls. The choice is yours.

Move aside protein granola nature valley bars—it's time to get baking in our own kitchens!

Making The Best Protein Granola

The best part about this protein granola recipe is that you can mix in almost anything you're in the mood for or whatever you happen to have in your pantry. But what makes for the best protein granola? Here's a list of fantastic options that make your granola nutritious, filling, and filled with perfectly combining flavors.

  • Nuts (walnuts, almonds, etc)

  • Dried fruits (cranberries, cherries)

  • Nut butter (any variety works to help stick protein granola bars together, so you can choose based on flavor)

  • Candy pieces (chocolate chips)

  • Flavored protein powder

  • Seeds (pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flaxseeds)

Perks Of Homemade Granola

Why bother making your own granola at home when you can buy it in the store? Store-bought granola is great, don't get me wrong, but there are a ton of reasons why you might want to whip up some on your own.

Here's why homemade protein granola bars (or a bag of it) are worth making at home:

  • Great for meal prep because you can store them for a week or so in the fridge.

  • With protein powder in the mix, they make for a great pre or post-workout snack.

  • Can customize your high protein granola a bunch of different ways

  • Easy to make—throw everything into a bowl, mix and bake

I used Four Sigmatic protein powder. It's made with mushrooms that are rich in nutrients!

The powder doesn't taste like mushrooms at all and has a sweet, slightly coconutty taste. Four Sigmatic's Vanilla Protein Powder has:

  • 18 grams of a blend of 5 pure organic vegan proteins

  • a balanced amino acid profile

  • a high dose of 7 amazing mushrooms and adaptogens

What You Need For Homemade Protein Granola Recipe

You can make this your own way, but the key to a good granola is having the proper ratio of ingredients. Especially because there are both dry and wet ingredients needed to make your own granola.

For my go-to high protein granola, I mix this together:

  • 1.5 cups of rolled oats

  • 1/4 tsp of salt

  • cinnamon to taste

  • .5 - 1 cup of peanut butter or other butter

  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup, honey, or agave

  • 2/3 cup of Four Sigmatic Sweet Vanilla protein powder

  • a handful of pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and chocolate chips (about a quarter cup of each)

*NOTE: The more mix-ins you use, the more sticking agent you will need. It will be harder for the bars to stick together and remain in a bar shape...but will still be a yummy granola snack!

What To Do

  1. Mix all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl

  2. Add in nut butter and maple syrup and mix well

  3. Spoon the mixture onto a tray with wax/parchment paper and flatten

  4. Cover with another layer of wax/parchment paper

  5. Freeze for 4-5 hours

  6. Cut into bars and store in an airtight container in the fridge for the week!

  7. If some of the bars don't hold well (this happens sometimes) use your creation as a granola snack on yogurt or by itself!
